Percy Hughes & Roberts celebrates 100-year anniversary
The firm is proud to celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. Here, we reflect on our past and look forward to our future.
Percy Hughes & Roberts is 100 not out, and after extensive research and some serious digging, our staff have begun to piece together the past 100 years of PHR.
Interestingly, our firm was formed by a local World War One Captain in 1919. Joseph Roberts, a demobbed Captain of the Royal Horse Artillery, had qualified as a solicitor shortly before the First World War.
The firm was presented with a brand new plaque to mark the occasion. This is on display in the reception area.
On his return from a distinguished military career, Joseph’s ambition was to practise law in the town of his birth. Roberts launched the business alongside Percy Bartlett Hughes, who never used his first name and was always known by the nickname Bart.
Percy Hughes & Roberts was originally based on Duncan Street, just off Hamilton Square in Birkenhead. Our current Hamilton Square office has been the firm’s headquarters since 1975.
Our current headquarters, Hamilton Square, has been our home for forty-four years.
We have since grown from a two-man company specialising in crime and litigation to a busy firm with a team of 26 staff, practising in a number of areas of law including Wills & Probate, Personal Injury and Conveyancing.

Alison Beech, Partner and Wills & Probate specialist, has worked for Percy Hughes & Roberts for 19 years and says she is proud to be associated with such a respected firm. She says:
As a firm, we are dedicated to providing clear, simple and cost-effective legal advice and we do our utmost to provide practical support to members of the community we serve.
The firm was called Percy Hughes & Roberts in 1919, a name it retains to this day. That cannot be said of many firms who are 100 years old. I think we are rightly proud of our name and have never seen the need to change it.
We recently celebrated the 100-year anniversary with a summer party, which was attended by members of staff and their families. It gave us a chance to reflect on the firm’s history, and look forward to the future.
On behalf of all Percy Hughes & Roberts - thank you to all of our clients, past and present for your continued trust in our service. Thank you to the wider Birkenhead, Wirral, Liverpool and Chester community for welcoming us with open arms. And of course, thank you to all of the present and past employees of Percy Hughes & Roberts for making the firm what it is.
Here’s to the next 100.
