Squatters - A Reprieve for Property Owners
It has been announced that the Secretary of State for Justice, Sir Kenneth Clarke, has asked his department to devise a law that will save property owners from having to bring civil proceedings against squatters.
Currently, squatters may legally enter an empty property providing that they do not cause damage when gaining access. Under the Government proposals, police will be empowered to seize buildings and bring criminal charges against such individuals, who will face jail.
In addition, the Department for Communities and Local Government has issued guidance to homeowners on their rights where their property has been unlawfully occupied.
