About cycling accident claims

If you have suffered an injury while out on your bike, you could be eligible for compensation. Claiming compensation can help with the recovery, along with the cost of repairing or replacing your bike and any equipment such as your helmet or clothing.

There are two types of damages that combine to make up your final compensation award, which are referred to as “general damages” and “special damages”. General damages relate to your compensation for your pain, suffering and loss of amenity. This figure is reached through a combination of guidelines developed by experts and past case law.

Special damages look at all financial losses you may have suffered due to your injury. These can be incredibly wide ranging for cyclists, and can include:

  • Damage to your bike
  • Damage to your cycling accessories
  • Medical costs
  • Travel costs to and from medical appointments
  • Loss of earnings
  • Care and assistance required

Special damages can vary from claim to claim, and between the affected parties. We advise that you retain any receipts and other documentary evidence of purchases that have been made as a direct result of the accident, as this can help to ensure the costs are recovered.

Examples of cycling accidents
