Figures released last year show that farming accidents account for the second highest work-related deaths in the UK
Working from heights, heavy and hazardous machinery, and being around unpredictable animals, are all factors that make the farm one of the riskiest workplaces in the UK.
The statistics
Data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that between 2011 and 2016 there were 152 deaths related to farming accidents.
The figures show that the farming industry accounts for 1.5 percent of all workers, but 15-20 percent of all worker fatalities according to the Health and Safety Executive.
Stephanie Berkeley, who heads the Farm Safety Foundation said:
The facts are shocking: 27 farm workers lost their lives in the workplace in 2016/17 and many more sustained life changing injuries.
Combating the problem
To try to combat this the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society and the Farm Safety Foundation are collaborating on a new farm safety initiative. The campaign focuses on highlighting the key risks that farmers face and aims to spread awareness surrounding making the simple day-to-day tasks a lot safer.
The initiative’s importance was made more apparent after a farming death in Bradford last Sunday (18th February). The 60-year-old farmer, Charlie Lovell, died after becoming trapped in farm machinery in West Yorkshire, police confirmed.
